MrBeast's YouTube strategy to earn money

In the vast and ever-evolving landscape of YouTube, few creators have risen to the extraordinary heights achieved by MrBeast. Starting his YouTube journey in February 2012, MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, began as an enthusiastic content creator with humble beginnings. At just 13 years old, MrBeast6000 attempted to truly understand YouTube’s algorithm by creating content that he thought would attract the largest audience at the time - funny compilations of playing Minecraft and Call of Duty, estimating celebrity’s wealth, commenting on YouTuber drama, and even offering YouTube tips and tricks. However none of the ‘trending’ videos made much of a dent on the video-sharing platform.

In late 2016, Jimmy Donaldson enrolled in college but lasted a mere 2 weeks before he dropped out, stating: “I’d rather be poor than do anything besides YouTube.” And, just a few months later, MrBeast came up with the idea to show himself counting to 100,000 and the video went viral! According to the YouTuber, it took him 44 hours to create this video but he knew that it would go viral (as of June 2023, this video has over 28 million views!)

MrBeast quickly came to the conclusion that YouTube’s algorithm favors challenge/stunt-style videos. The aspiring YouTuber created more and more videos following similar stunts and quite quickly amassed a large number of views and subscribers. By the end of 2017, MrBeast reached 1 million subscribers - which was no easy feat at the time.

Fast forward to the present, and MrBeast's meteoric rise has cemented his status as one of the platform's biggest stars.

How much money does MrBeast have?

Currently, MrBeast has a jaw-dropping net worth of $500 million! Back in 2022, the uber-successful creator earned $54 million, including $32 million from ads across his dozen-plus channels and $9 million from sponsored content. Notably, in 2023, he stands tall as YouTube's highest-earning content creator, earning closer to $110 million.

How many subscribers does MrBeast have?

MrBeast currently has over 250 million subscribers across all his YouTube channels. As of right now, MrBeast’s main channel - MrBeast - has 161M subscribers, Beast Philantrophy has 14.2M subscribers, MrBeast Gaming has 34.4M subscribers, MrBeast 2 has 26.3M subscribers, and Beast Reacts has 26M subscribers.

So, what lies behind MrBeast's astounding success? What is the secret to his YouTube strategy? Over the years, MrBeast has shared a number of different tips and tricks that have helped him reach his staggering level of success. Here are just 5 strategies that any content creator, whether you are just starting out or an OG YouTuber, can implement to their YouTube strategy.

Multi-language strategy

Although it seems like everyone speaks and understands English, roughly only 13% of the world speaks the English language. So, if you are creating content only in English, 87% of people on the internet will not access your content because they simply do not understand.

MrBeast saw this as a huge opportunity to expand his brand and reach - how can he create content that will attract those 87% of people on the internet?

In mid-2022, the YouTuber created a number of MrBeast channels in multiple languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian, Indian, Arabic, and there’s more to come.

Wait, but MrBeast obviously doesn’t speak all those languages. Instead, he took the uber-successful content he already created and simply dubbed the voices into the language of choice. As you can see from the data above, MrBeast’s content is successful also internationally and the ability for viewers to watch the content in their desired language has helped MrBeast grow exponentially. At a quick glance, MrBeast’s Spanish channel has over 24 million subscribers (in just one year!) and the content on that channel get an average of 36 million views. The most popular video on his Spanish channel is El Juego del Calamer en la Vida Real por $456,000 (to no one’s surprise).

How many channels does MrBeast have?

MrBeast currently has 18 YouTube channels:

As of recently, YouTube also caught onto this strategy and has introduced a new feature - multi-language - which enables creators to add tracks of multiple languages to their English-speaking video.

MrBeast’s YouTube tip: YouTubers should consider dubbing their videos into multiple languages so you can expand your reach, increasing your views and subscribers. Which languages should you choose? Well, the 3 most spoken languages around the world are: Mandarin Chinese (1B speakers), Hindi (700M speakers), and Spanish (500M speakers). Keep in mind - you should do some research to find whether the content you create is popular in the target countries because if, for example, people in China aren’t interested in book reviews, there is no point in dubbing your content into Mandarin Chinese.

YouTube thumbnail

MrBeast has mentioned it time and time again that the three factors that influence whether or not someone clicks on a YouTube video are: topic, title, and thumbnail - and the three must work together. The successful YouTuber shared a few tips to nailing the video’s thumbnail:

  • The thumbnail should depict what the viewer should expect to see in the video
  • The video title and thumbnail should obviously align
  • It’s wise to follow a specific theme when creating thumbnails so viewers immediately recognize that its a video from your channel
  • Take a screenshot of YouTube’s homepage and add a picture of your newest thumbnail by editing the screenshot so you can see how the viewer will see your thumbnail amongst the other content on the platform

For example:

During an interview, MrBeast revealed that when creating a thumbnail for his latest video, he creates two to three different variations “so that if a video doesn't perform well, we can swap it out.” Then, if the video doesn’t reach its expected level of success, the MrBeast team will change the thumbnail image. In MrBeast’s case, this happens within the first few minutes of the video going live.

MrBeast’s YouTube tip: MrBeast has proven time and time again that the thumbnail will determine how successful the video will be and it truly makes a difference for the channel - in MrBeast’s case, it can be a tens of millions of views difference. So, a lot of effort should go towards the actual content of the video, but don’t push the thumbnail creation to the side. Think about it - you can put all your blood, sweat, and tears into a video but if no one clicks on the thumbnail, no one will see your hard work.

Short form content is here to stay

Since 2019, MrBeast stands by his notion - Short-form is here to stay and is only going to get bigger and bigger. The uber-successful YouTuber explained that Shorts are a great way to direct viewers and potential subscribers to a creator’s primary channel (where long-form content is then uploaded) - increasing the YouTuber’s revenue.

Now, with YouTube Shorts’ advertising revenue split, MrBeast confidently believes that the video-sharing platform will dominate the space, surpassing TikTok. The YouTuber stated, “When you get ads on Shorts now, YouTube is going to share the revenue with creators. So, if you get a billion views on TikTok, hypothetically, that’s like $1,000. If you get a billion views here on YouTube, that could literally make you $100,000.”

Audience > Algorithm

Now, this is a tip you should definitely jot down - “Anytime you say the word ‘algorithm’, just replace it with ‘audience’. The algorithm didn’t like that video? No. The audience didn’t like that video.”

At the end of the day, you are creating content because you love, well, creating content. And, you want to share this content with as many people as possible. So, instead of thinking ‘what does the algorithm want’, consider what your audience wants to see. The more people that watch your video, the more likely it will excite YouTube’s algorithm. However, if you only think about creating content that will be pushed by YouTube’s algorithm, it may not attract audiences and therefore will anyways receive less views and engagement.

MrBeast’s YouTube tip: YouTube’s algorithm is constantly changing, adapting and updating so, instead of trying to trying to continuously understand what the algorithm wants to see, focus on what your audience enjoys - they turned to your content for a reason.

Quality over quantity

You may be scratching your head - people online usually preach for quantity and consistency because people remember what they see regularly. However, according to MrBeast, “Quality gives your video exponential success per unit of effort; quantity relies on building a more extensive content repository and achieving incremental (but mediocre) success. Putting 20% more effort into a video can triple the outcome of views or monetary gains.”

This is a tip MrBeast had to learn firsthand. When he first started on YouTube, he was posting videos one after another, with very little concern about the quality of the content. However, the video that ultimately caused his channel to go viral - Counting to 100,000 - took the creator 44 hours to make. That’s when Jimmy Donaldson understood that the extra (extra!) effort pays off. Now, MrBeast uploads one video a month - but he pours A LOT of effort (literally blood, sweat and tears) into that one video.

MrBeast’s YouTube tip: While posting many, many videos in a short amount of time can help increase your channel’s inventory and can allow you to test what content works and what doesn’t work, MrBeast is confident that quality will help you grow your reach, your success, and ultimately your monetary gains.
