Who has cable anymore? For better or for worse, the current climate forces us to depend on alternative sources for news and live updates. This has also affected how we follow and connect to our favorite sports: instead of relying on cable, sports fans have become dependent on following the top sports podcasts. For instance, in an increasingly globalized and borderless world, you have people like me who live on one side of the globe, but are still desperate to track the Toronto Raptors despite the eight hour time difference.
I’m not alone in this either! The podcast revolution is hitting everyone in the western world, especially when it comes to sports-related podcasts. There are over 100,000 sports podcasts available on Spotify. According to SportsNexus, over 800,000 hours of sports content is streamed everyday. Can you guess what is the most popular sport for podcasts? You guessed it - Soccer (football). The industry is obviously scaling at an unprecedented rate and it's time for all of us to get on board. So in honor of the new reality- take a look at a few of our favorite sport news podcasts:
I thought I’d kick us off (super funny play on words if you know who Pat is) with my personal favorite sports podcast, the infamous Pat McAfee. Pat really is the definition of a renaissance man. After being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the 7th round of the 2009 NFL draft, Pat had an awesome 8 year career as a punter, where he made two Pro Bowls and was even an All-Pro in 2014. Since his retirement from the NFL, McAfee has kept himself busy as a sports analyst, college football announcer, businessman, WWE guest wrestler and of course, pro podcaster of his hit sports show. The Pat McAfee Show has gained a cult following and millions of followers due to Pat’s electric personality, behind the scenes NFL stories and his hilarious antics that connect him with his audience on a different level.

“Zach Lowe talks to various basketball people about various basketball things.” What a fine way to sum up this all things basketball podcast. Host Zach Lowe is a sports analyst and sports journalist who dives into everything happening in the NBA and basketball world with coaches, analysts and both past and current NBA players. Zach started his career covering issues within the legal system but then found a way to monetize his true passion- talking sports with his buddies. ESPN podcasts are somewhat of a gold standard when it comes to talking about sports podcasts.

In honor of the Euro League competition currently taking place, let’s celebrate our favorite friends from across the pond. Football Daily podcast is a product of the BBC and covers the latest news from the UEFA and Euro 2020 with it’s energetic and passionate hosts, Mark Chapman, Steve Crossman and Emma Saunders. I don’t think they realize the sport is called “soccer” but the more I read it, the more football makes sense as a name.
Breaking down the biggest disappointments from the Euro’s:

Pardon My Take is in many ways the sports radio jewel of the Barstool Empire. Pardon My Take is hosted by the hilarious dynamic duo of Big Cat and PFT (both their real names) and covers sports updates in the most comedic and gimmicky ways possible. Their insights are not only hilarious, but painfully accurate. Their show is certainly McAfee-esque with their stunts and interviews with athletes, coaches and owners alike attracting about 1 million listeners per episode.
