Flat Fee vs CPM

Short Definition

A flat fee is one fixed price for a sponsored read, whatever the video gets. A CPM deal pays per thousand views the video delivers, usually up to a cap. CPM deals shift the view risk from the brand to the creator.

‍

Detailed Definition

  • Flat fee. Simple to budget and to approve. The brand carries the risk that the video underperforms, which is why flat fees often come with a view guarantee and a makegood.
  • CPM. Price = views ÷ 1,000 × the agreed CPM, counted at a fixed video age and usually capped. The creator carries the view risk, so creators price that risk into the rate.
  • Hybrid. A smaller flat fee plus a CPM bonus above a threshold.

‍

How to Compare Them

Turn any flat fee into an effective CPM by dividing it by the channel's projected views and multiplying by 1,000. Use projected views at day 30, not a simple average of recent videos, which outliers inflate. A CPM on its own is not enough to judge an offer: renewals, audience fit and evergreen views after day 30 all change what a read is worth.

Flat Fee vs CPM at ThoughtLeaders

ThoughtLeaders prices a channel like a home appraisal: a fair-value estimate, not the price a creator will quote. It starts from day-30 projected views and a cost per view that drops as channels get bigger, then adjusts for drivers such as renewals, view trend and audience.
