Engaged Views

Short Definition

Engaged views are what YouTube Studio now calls the view count YouTube used publicly until August 24, 2026. On that date YouTube switched public view counts to count from the first frame, so public counts on long-form videos now run higher than engaged views, most of all in a video's first days.

‍

Detailed Definition

Before the change, a public view needed some watch time to count. Since August 24, 2026, the public counter includes views from the first frame, and the earlier count lives on in Studio as engaged views. Public counters on the watch page moved on August 28 and 29.

  • Long-form. In our measurement, public views run about 1.2 to 1.5 times the old basis in a video's first week. The gap is largest in the first days and on 4 to 60 minute videos, and it shrinks as videos age.
  • Shorts. No change. Shorts already counted from the first frame since March 2025.
  • Older videos. Videos published before the change still gain views, and those new views are counted the new way, so lifetime totals mix both rules.

‍

Why It Matters to Brands

  • Quotes look cheaper. The same audience now shows more public views, so a CPM worked out from public views reads lower than it would have before.
  • Guarantees. Count view guarantees in engaged views from the creator's Studio, at a fixed age such as day 30, so a makegood is judged on a number both sides trust.
  • Benchmarks. Compare like with like: same counting rule, same video age.
